Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent does the work for a person: researching, comparing, and increasingly buying or booking. To be ready, your website needs clear, crawlable text, accurate structured data for products, services, prices and policies, consistent business listings, and a simple path to book or buy that a machine can follow.
- 46% of AI users now start purchase research on an AI platform, up from 25% in 2024, while traditional search as a starting point fell from 43% to 24% (L.E.K. Consulting).
- 56% of consumers use AI agents to search and compare products, but only 15% of merchants have catalogs AI agents can find (Visa Acceptance Solutions, 2026).
- In January 2026, Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart to power checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini.
- AI-referred shoppers convert 31% better than other visitors (Adobe), so being agent-readable is a revenue issue, not just a technical one.
What is agentic commerce?
It's when an AI agent shops, compares or books on someone's behalf. Instead of a person opening ten tabs, they ask an assistant, "Find me a highly rated dog groomer near Leesburg that can take a doodle this Saturday," and the agent searches, compares and, more and more often, completes the booking or purchase.
The shift is already showing up in behavior. L.E.K. Consulting found nearly half of AI users now start their purchase research on an AI platform, a share that almost doubled in two years.

How fast is AI shopping growing?
Fast, and from a real base. A few of the clearest 2026 signals:
- Adobe reported a 1,200% year-over-year increase in AI-sourced traffic to U.S. retail sites, and AI-referred shoppers converted 31% better than other visitors.
- NielsenIQ found 55% of consumers say AI recommendations at least sometimes influence what they buy, across 31 countries.
- Visa Acceptance Solutions found 1 in 3 consumers are already willing to let an AI agent handle payments.
- NielsenIQ projects agentic shoppers could account for $190–385 billion in U.S. e-commerce spending by 2030.

What are Google's Universal Commerce Protocol and agentic checkout?
They're the plumbing that lets AI agents buy from businesses directly. On January 11, 2026, Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart and endorsed by more than 20 others, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe and Adyen. It gives AI agents, shopping surfaces, businesses and payment providers a common language, so each agent doesn't need a custom integration.
UCP powers a checkout option on eligible Google product listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app, where shoppers can buy from eligible U.S. retailers without leaving the conversation. Retailers stay the seller of record. Google also launched a Business Agent, a branded AI chat that answers shoppers' questions in a retailer's voice, activated through Merchant Center.
OpenAI is moving in the same direction inside ChatGPT. The message for every business: AI assistants are becoming storefronts.
Does agentic commerce matter for service businesses?
Yes, because agents book as well as buy. A dentist, salon, contractor or law firm won't run a product checkout inside Gemini tomorrow. But AI assistants are already the ones reading your services, prices, hours, service area and reviews, and recommending (or skipping) you. Agents that book appointments rely on the same thing a checkout does: information they can read and trust, and a next step they can complete.
The agent-ready website stack
Each layer helps an AI agent understand, trust and act on your business
- 01
Readable
Key facts in plain HTML text: services, prices, area, hours.
- 02
Structured
Schema markup for business, services, products, offers, FAQs.
- 03
Consistent
Website, Google Business Profile and feeds say the same thing.
- 04
Trusted
Recent reviews, clear policies, real contact details.
- 05
Actionable
A simple booking or checkout flow an agent can complete.
How do you make a website ready for AI agents?
Make everything an agent needs explicit, accurate and machine-readable. Start here:
- Put key facts in real text. Services, prices or price ranges, service area, hours, policies and turnaround times belong in HTML text, not only in images or PDFs.
- Add structured data. LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Offer, FAQPage and Review schema tell machines exactly what's on the page.
- Publish clear policies. Returns, cancellations, warranties, deposits and shipping. Agents compare these.
- Keep feeds and profiles in sync. Google Business Profile, and for retailers Google Merchant Center, should match your website exactly.
- Make booking and buying simple. A short, standard online booking or checkout flow is easier for both humans and agents to complete.
- Keep it fast and crawlable. Avoid hiding essential content behind logins, pop-ups or heavy scripts.
None of this is wasted if agents take longer to arrive than predicted. Every item also makes your site better for human visitors and for answer engine optimization.
Your agent-readiness checklist
- List your top 10 services or products with prices or price ranges in plain text.
- Add or validate schema (LocalBusiness, Service/Product, Offer, FAQPage) with Google's Rich Results Test.
- Write a clear policies page: booking, cancellation, returns, guarantees.
- Match your website, Google Business Profile and Merchant Center data exactly.
- Test your booking or checkout flow on a phone in under two minutes.
- Ask ChatGPT and Gemini to find and compare your service. Fix whatever they get wrong.

Do small businesses need to worry about AI shopping agents now?
You don't need to rebuild your business around them, but you should make your website agent-readable now. Visa's 2026 research found only 15% of merchants have catalogs AI agents can find, so early movers have a real advantage.
