What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI

SEO & AEOBy , Founder
The short answer

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews can understand it, trust it and cite it in their answers. It builds on SEO, but rewards direct answers, original data, named sources and consistent business information over keyword volume.

Key takeaways
  • In research presented at KDD 2024, adding statistics and quotations to content raised its visibility in AI answers by roughly 30–40%. Keyword stuffing made it worse.
  • AI search is no longer one platform: Gemini's share of AI web traffic grew from under 9% to about 28% in a year, while ChatGPT's fell from about 76% to 53%.
  • Citations are rising: the share of U.S. ChatGPT prompts that showed a source citation grew from about 1.6% to 6.8% between mid-2025 and May 2026.
  • The fastest AEO wins for small businesses are answer-first copy, FAQ sections, schema markup and accurate, consistent business listings.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

AEO is optimizing your content to be the answer, not just a blue link. When someone asks ChatGPT "who's the best family dentist in Vienna, VA?" or asks Google a question that triggers an AI Overview, the AI writes a summary and, increasingly, names its sources. AEO is the work of making your business one of those sources.

You'll also hear it called generative engine optimization (GEO) or AI search optimization. The labels differ; the goal is the same: be understood, trusted and quoted by the AI tools your customers now use to research decisions.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO earns rankings; AEO earns mentions. Traditional SEO is about ranking a page in a list of results and winning the click. AEO is about being extracted: an AI model reads many pages, pulls the clearest facts, and composes one answer. That changes what "good content" looks like.

  • SEO rewards relevance, backlinks, technical health and the right keywords on the right page.
  • AEO rewards a direct answer near the top, specific facts and numbers, clear authorship, structured data, and the same business details repeated consistently across the web.

The good news: AEO doesn't replace SEO. AI systems with live search still lean on pages that search engines can crawl and trust. Strong SEO is the foundation; AEO is the layer that makes your content easy to quote.

What actually gets content cited by AI?

The most-cited research on this comes from a team at Princeton and IIT Delhi, published at the KDD 2024 conference. They tested nine ways of rewriting web content and measured how visible each source became inside AI-generated answers. Three findings matter for any business blog:

  1. Add real numbers. "Statistics addition" (swapping vague claims for specific figures) lifted visibility by about 31%.
  2. Quote people and cite sources. Adding quotations from credible sources lifted visibility about 41%, and citing sources about 27%.
  3. Stop keyword stuffing. It performed below the unoptimized baseline. AI models aren't counting keywords; they're looking for clear, verifiable information.

Notice the pattern. Every winning tactic makes content more useful to a reader who wants evidence. That's the whole game.

Which AI platforms should a small business care about?

All the major ones, because your customers are spreading out. Similarweb's 2026 data shows ChatGPT still leads, but Gemini has more than tripled its share of AI web traffic in a year, and Claude has grown too. Google's AI Overviews, which appear right inside search results, now show up on more than 20% of U.S. Google searches according to SparkToro's 2026 analysis.

Each platform draws on slightly different sources. Gemini, for example, pulls directly from Google Maps and your Google Business Profile. ChatGPT leans more on the open web and third-party listings. That's why AEO is less about "gaming" one tool and more about being consistently, verifiably present everywhere AI looks.

How do you structure a page so AI can quote it?

Lead with the answer, then prove it. Here's the page pattern we use for clients:

  • Question-style headings. Write H2s the way people ask: "How much does a website cost in Northern Virginia?" AI tools match questions to headings.
  • A 40–60 word answer right under each heading. Make the first sentence a complete, quotable answer. Then expand.
  • Specific, sourced facts. Numbers with a named source and year. "Most customers read reviews" is weak; "97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal, 2026)" is quotable.
  • A visible author. A real name, role and short bio signal expertise and accountability.
  • An FAQ section and schema markup. FAQ and Article structured data label your content for machines in a language they already understand.
  • Tables and lists. Comparison tables, step lists and pricing ranges are easy for AI to extract accurately.

Anatomy of an answer-ready page

Six elements that make a page easy for AI tools to understand, trust and quote

How much does a new website cost?
1

Question heading. Phrase H2s the way customers ask, so AI can match the question to your section.

The short answer: one or two complete sentences that stand on their own.
2

Answer first. A complete 40–60 word answer in the first sentences under the heading.

3

Sourced facts. Specific numbers with a named source and year. Research shows statistics boost AI visibility.

How do you measure AEO results?

Track visibility, not just visits. AI answers often satisfy the question without a click, so classic traffic reports undercount your impact. A practical scorecard:

  • Prompt checks. Monthly, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 10–20 questions your customers ask. Record whether you're mentioned or cited.
  • AI referral traffic. In Google Analytics 4, look for sessions from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com.
  • Branded search and direct traffic. When AI mentions you, people often Google your name next.
  • Calls, form fills and "how did you hear about us?" Add "ChatGPT / AI assistant" as an option. You'll be surprised.

Your AEO starter checklist

  • Rewrite your top 5 service pages with a question H2 and a 40–60 word answer under it.
  • Add one sourced statistic to every key page, with the source and year named in the sentence.
  • Publish an FAQ section with the 6–10 questions customers actually ask your front desk.
  • Add Article, FAQPage and LocalBusiness schema (or ask us to).
  • Make your name, address, phone and hours identical on your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook and Apple Maps.
  • Run a monthly prompt check in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and log what they say about you.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly, yes. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) both describe optimizing content so AI systems cite it. Some marketers use AEO for featured snippets and voice assistants and GEO for generative AI, but in practice the tactics overlap almost completely.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AI tools that search the web in real time still rely on pages search engines can crawl and trust. Technical SEO, quality content and backlinks remain the foundation. AEO adds answer-first formatting, sourced facts, structured data and consistent listings on top.

How long does AEO take to work?

AI tools with live web search can pick up changes within weeks of a page being re-crawled. Changes to what a model 'knows' from training take much longer. Most businesses should expect to see early movement in prompt checks within one to three months.

Can a small local business really show up in ChatGPT?

Yes, but it takes consistency. AI tools favor businesses with complete, accurate listings, strong recent reviews and clear, specific website content. Independent businesses that make those signals easy to find can compete with much larger brands.
