ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements shown below ChatGPT's answers to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, matched to the topic of the conversation. OpenAI began testing them in the U.S. in February 2026. For most small businesses, the smart move in 2026 is a small, well-tracked test, not a budget shift away from Google or Meta.
- OpenAI began testing ChatGPT ads in the U.S. on February 9, 2026, and had expanded to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea by August.
- Ads appear only for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users don't see them.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week; Similarweb found roughly 26% of ChatGPT responses it analyzed included an ad.
- Early partner results are promising (WeightWatchers reported cost per acquisition 15.3% below its paid search benchmark), but they aren't platform-wide benchmarks yet.
What are ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads are sponsored listings that appear alongside ChatGPT's answers. According to OpenAI, they're clearly labeled as sponsored, visually separated from the response, and matched to what you're talking about. Ask for weeknight dinner ideas, for example, and you might see a meal-kit ad under the answer.
OpenAI has made three commitments that shape how these ads work:
- Answer independence. Ads are not supposed to influence what ChatGPT says.
- Privacy. Advertisers don't see anyone's chats, history or memories, only aggregate performance like views and clicks.
- Sensitive-topic limits. No ads for users believed to be under 18, and no ads near health, mental health or political conversations.

When did ChatGPT ads launch, and where are they available?
The rollout has moved quickly. OpenAI started a U.S. test in February 2026, added pilots in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and by mid-August had launched in five more countries. In October it announced a visual ad format and an expanded list of measurement partners.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education) are ad-free. That matters for targeting: your ads will reach ChatGPT's massive free audience, but not the professional users on paid plans.
Placement data is starting to emerge. Similarweb's 2026 Generative AI Landscape report found that about 26% of the ChatGPT responses it analyzed contained an ad, that roughly a third of ad impressions appeared in the very first response of a session, and about a fifth appeared at the tenth message or later.

Do ChatGPT ads work?
Early results look good, with caveats. In October 2026, OpenAI shared results measured by third-party partners:
- WeightWatchers' attributed cost per acquisition from ChatGPT ads was 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark (measured by DV Rockerbox).
- 93% of visitors that leather-goods brand Portland Leather got from ChatGPT ads were new customers (measured by Triple Whale).
These are hand-picked early results from a young ad platform, not averages. Still, they suggest something important: people researching in ChatGPT are often deep in a decision, and an ad matched to that conversation can reach them at a high-intent moment.
Should my small business advertise on ChatGPT?
Test it if your customers research before they buy; wait if your business is purely "near me." ChatGPT conversations skew toward planning, comparing and learning: choosing a wedding photographer, comparing CRMs, planning a home renovation, researching a medical procedure (though health topics are excluded from ads). Businesses that sell considered purchases are the natural fit.
Is your business a fit for ChatGPT ads?
A quick gut check before you test
Strong fit: customers research first
- Home renovation, remodeling, landscaping design
- Weddings, events and photography
- Education, tutoring and courses
- B2B services and software
- Travel, hospitality and experiences
- Higher-ticket retail and e-commerce
Lower priority: urgent or purely local
- Emergency plumbing, locksmiths, towing
- Quick-service restaurants
- “Open now near me” searches
- Health and medical services (sensitive topics are excluded from ads)
How do you run a smart first test?
Small budget, clear goal, clean tracking. If ChatGPT ads are available to you:
- Pick one offer with a landing page built for it, not your homepage.
- Set up conversion tracking first. OpenAI now works with measurement partners such as Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp, AppsFlyer, Triple Whale and Northbeam. At minimum, tag landing-page URLs with UTM parameters so GA4 attributes conversions correctly.
- Cap the budget at what you'd spend testing any new channel, and run it long enough to collect meaningful conversions.
- Compare like with like. Judge cost per lead or sale against your Google Search and Meta campaigns, not against impressions.
- Keep your organic AI visibility work going. Ads put you next to the answer. Answer engine optimization puts you in the answer, and it compounds.
Before you spend a dollar on ChatGPT ads
- Ask: do my customers research before buying? If yes, you're a fit for testing.
- Build one dedicated landing page with a single, clear call to action.
- Install conversion tracking and UTM tags so results are comparable to Google and Meta.
- Set a test budget and a success metric (cost per lead or sale) before launch.
- Check how ChatGPT already describes your business organically, and fix inaccuracies first.
Frequently asked questions
When did ChatGPT start showing ads?
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on February 9, 2026. Pilots followed in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and by August 11, 2026, ads had launched in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
Which ChatGPT users see ads?
Logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans are ad-free, and accounts believed to belong to users under 18 are excluded.
Can advertisers see my ChatGPT conversations?
No. According to OpenAI, advertisers cannot access chats, chat history, memories or personal details. They receive only aggregate performance data such as views and clicks.
Do ChatGPT ads affect ChatGPT's answers?
OpenAI says no. Its stated principle of 'answer independence' means ads should not influence the content of ChatGPT's responses, and ads are labeled and shown separately from the answer.
Are ChatGPT ads worth it for a local service business?
It depends on how your customers buy. Considered, research-heavy purchases are the strongest fit. Businesses that win mostly on urgent 'near me' searches will usually get more from Google Business Profile, Local Services Ads and search campaigns first.
